Elections

How does it work? During an election, the City of Grand Ledge requires a staff of paid workers called 'Precinct Inspectors' to work at the polls.  Workers are paid $12.00 an hour and required to work while polls are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. A precinct inspector must be a registered voter of the State. They cannot be a challenger, candidate, member of a candidate's immediate family, or a member of the local Board of Canvassers. Anyone convicted of a felony or an election crime may not serve. Chosen inspectors are required to attend a paid training in February to work during any 2020 election. The training typically lasts two hours.

I'm not 18... can I still work? Yes! Election workers must be 16 years of age or older. Any 16 or 17 year old is only permitted to work a half day. Any high school student interested in participating must obtain a work release from Grand Ledge High School. Students may choose to be paid the rate of $12.00 an hour or collect NHS hours, if applicable.

Elections

GENERAL INFORMATION: The City Clerk conducts all federal, state, county, local, and special elections held within the City. All registered voters in the City vote at Sawdon School Administration Building, 220 Lamson Street, Grand Ledge, MI 48837. For all elections, polls are open from 7:00am to 8:00pm. Anyone standing in line at 8:00pm will be allowed to vote. Click the link to see voting Ward Map.

PHOTO IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENT: Before you can vote on election day, you must provide photo identification.  If you don’t have acceptable photo identification with you, you can still vote by signing an affidavit stating 1) you don’t have acceptable photo identification or 2) you have acceptable photo identification, but didn't bring it to the polls.

PERMANENT ABSENT VOTER LIST: The City Clerk maintains a list of voters who request an absent voter ballot application be mailed to them for every election held in the City. A change in Michigan Law now allows for "no-reason" absentee voting; that means any registered voted can be placed on the Permanenet Absent Voter list, or request an Absentee Ballot without providing a reason for not voting at the polls on election day. Voters who wish to be placed on this list may indicate their request on any regular absent voter ballot application they have received from the City or fill out this application and return it to the City Clerk, 310 Greenwood St., Grand Ledge MI 48837.
